Where to Stay in Kashmir: Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam or Sonamarg?
For many first-time Kashmir itineraries, Srinagar is a practical main base, with Pahalgam or Gulmarg nights added when they support the activities and pace you want. Choose overnight stops before choosing hotel names. A well-located room and a realistic route can matter more than adding another destination to the booking.

Compare the main overnight stops

Srinagar hotel or houseboat?
A hotel may suit travellers who prioritise direct road access, familiar room arrangements or an easy base for repeated outings. A houseboat offers a different setting, but access and facilities vary. Neither category automatically guarantees a particular comfort level.
- Confirm the exact property name, room category and location.
- Ask whether arrival involves steps, a boat transfer or a walk from the vehicle.
- Check heating type and availability, hot water and any extra charges.
- Confirm meals, luggage assistance and the arrangement for early departures.
- Tell the operator about children’s needs, mobility requirements or a stroller before booking.

Gulmarg day trip or overnight stay?
Choose a day trip when you want one main outing and prefer fewer hotel changes. Consider an overnight if you want dedicated lesson time, a slower morning or simply more time in Gulmarg. An overnight does not guarantee a Gondola ride or snowfall.

How many nights in Pahalgam?
One night lets you break the road journey and spend a morning locally. Two nights give more space for a confirmed valley excursion and a quieter day. A property described as being in the wider Pahalgam area may not be in the location you pictured, so check it on the map and ask about the daily route.

Example night splits to discuss
- 4 nights: three Srinagar nights and one Pahalgam night, if arrival and departure times make the route comfortable.
- 5 nights: three Srinagar nights and two Pahalgam nights for a slower valley visit, or replace one night with Gulmarg if it serves your activity plans.
- 6 nights: three Srinagar nights, two Pahalgam nights and one Gulmarg night as a possible starting point.
These examples do not prescribe the sequence. Discuss an appropriate final-night location and transfer buffer for your departure. A houseboat stay can replace a Srinagar hotel night where suitable. Sonamarg or Gurez should be incorporated through a deliberate route change, not squeezed into an already full day.
Hotel questions that matter for families and couples
For families, confirm the number of rooms, beds, child ages, extra-bed arrangement, steps and meal times. For couples, specify the room category and any particular setting you care about; descriptions such as “premium” or “romantic” do not establish the view or facilities.

Is staying in Srinagar for the whole trip cheaper?
It can reduce hotel changes, but compare the complete transport cost and time spent on repeated day trips. The best choice depends on your dates and priorities.
Should we book by star rating alone?
No. Verify the actual hotel, room, location, heating, meals and access. Two quotes using the same broad category can describe different stays.
