Kashmir Travel Guide 2025: Family-Friendly Adventures, Cultural Gems & Tips

Why Kashmir Should Be Your Next Family Holiday

Often called the “Paradise on Earth,” Kashmir is a dream destination for families and adventure seekers alike. Imagine gliding across the mirror‑like waters of Dal Lake in a shikara, strolling through fragrant Mughal gardens and tasting warm noon chai (pink salted tea) while the Himalayas tower above. Thanks to improved security and infrastructure, tourist hubs such as Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam are welcoming travellers again. The best times to visit are spring (March–May) and summer (June–September) when the valleys burst into bloom and the weather is comfortable. Winter (December–February) transforms the slopes into a skiing paradise.

7‑Day Kashmir Itinerary: Experience the Best of Paradise

Day 1‑2: Srinagar – Start in Kashmir’s capital. Stay on a traditional houseboat and take a shikara ride on Dal Lake. Don’t miss the floating markets and vendors selling saffron and fresh produce. Visit the largest tulip garden in Asia – Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden – which blooms with 1.5 million tulips from March to April. Wander through the Mughal gardens: Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh, designed in the 17th century and known for their fountains and terraces. For panoramic views of the lake and city, climb to the hill‑top Shankaracharya Temple, and if you want a quieter setting, head to nearby Nigeen Lake with its serene houseboats.

Day 3: Gulmarg – A 1.5‑hour drive from Srinagar brings you to this alpine playground. Take the Gulmarg Gondola, one of the world’s highest cable cars, to Kongdoori and Apharwat peaks. Skiers flock here in winter, while summer travellers can enjoy hiking, mountain biking and playing a round at the world’s highest golf course. Book gondola tickets online, bring warm clothes and note that children under 11 aren’t allowed on the third phase.

Day 4: Pahalgam – This tranquil valley is famous for its lush meadows and trout‑filled Lidder River. Betaab Valley offers postcard‑perfect landscapes; Chandanwari is the gateway to the holy Amarnath Yatra and is great for sledging; Aru Valley is a base for treks like Kolahoi Glacier; and Baisaran (Mini Switzerland) is perfect for pony rides across alpine meadows. Pack comfortable shoes and carry cash (ATMs are scarce), and remember that winters are chilly.

Day 5: Sonamarg – Known as the “Meadow of Gold,” Sonamarg is dotted with glaciers and wildflowers. Hire a pony to reach the snow‑clad Thajiwas Glacier. Baltal Valley is another highlight, offering lush grasslands and camping from April to September. The best months to visit are May to October, but anglers will love the trout fishing season from April to September.

Day 6: Gurez Valley or Yusmarg – For an off‑the‑beaten‑path adventure, drive to Gurez Valley via Razdan Pass. Sail along the Kishanganga River, marvel at Wular Lake and the pyramid‑shaped Habba Khatoon peak. Gurez is cut off by snow from December to April, so plan accordingly. Alternatively, visit Yusmarg, a meadow associated with Jesus’s visit. Trek to Doodh Ganga River, Tosa Maidan and the turquoise Nilnag Lake.

Day 7: Shopping & Departure – Before you leave, wander through Srinagar’s old city bazaars. Invest in an authentic pashmina shawl – hand‑spun from fine Changthangi goat wool and woven into shawls that once signified Mughal nobility. Each pashmina stole takes around 180 hours to weave. Pick up colourful papier‑mâché items, a craft introduced in the 15th century and still made by hand today.

Travel Tips & Safety

Kashmir’s safety situation has improved considerably and tourist hubs are secure. Still, stay updated on the news, follow local guidelines and avoid restricted areas. Spring (March–May) and summer (June–September) offer pleasant weather and blooming landscapes; winter brings snow, perfect for skiing and snowboarding. Carry warm clothes, gloves and waterproof boots. Post‑paid SIM cards work best in Kashmir, and ATMs may not always be available so keep cash handy.

Cultural & Culinary Highlights

Indulge in a wazwan feast—a multi‑course meal of succulent kebabs and rich curries served on a large copper platter. Sip noon chai, a distinctive pink tea brewed with black tea, milk, salt and a pinch of baking soda. Try the region’s fresh fruits and saffron, and enjoy crisp bread from local bakeries. Take home a piece of Kashmir’s heritage with pashmina shawls and papier‑mâché vases described above.
